Of our many players who have gone on to represent England - who do you believe is the best we have had amongst our ranks?

I think that Compton has had the greatest impact as a England test player.

Agree with Alan, undoubtedly our most consistent and successful England Test player, not only for the runs he scored but for the attractive and entertaining way he got them, and normally against the strongest opposition of Australia and South Africa

On a par with those mentioned are JT Hearne and JW (Young Jack) Hearne and Freddie Titmus who along with Patsy Hendren have no recognition anywhere in the Club. I raised this at an AGM maybe last year. Stated that if Barnet Copthall or anywhere else gets off the ground. Then those four should have plaques put up in appropriate places. Glad to say, that from the top table Angus Fraser agreed with me. With the arrival of The Hundred, an alternative revenue stream which Copthall will provide is required for MX longevity The future of the next door rugby club is key. All under the cosh from covid-19.

Both JT and JW had modest England careers, and although Titmus performed adequately on occasions, none of these had anywhere near outstanding Test records compared with Patsy or DCS. Bill Edrich and Gus had far more impressive figures. The question is somewhat ambiguous, as it may be interpreted as which England players had the most impact for Middlesex, in which case certainly the above should be included along with Gatt, Ramps, and JT Murray, whilst Edmonds.Embers,Tuffers ,Jack Young,Robertson and Mossy all made significant contributions, Brears made a huge impression with his captaincy,if not his runs, whilst Strauusy excelled in both departments.Others who deserve a mention for distinguished contributions to the county's cause include John Price,Jim Smith,Peter Parfitt,Eric Russell.Gubby Allen,Walter Robins and of course Clive Radley.

I grew up listening to my father talk about watching Compton from the free seets at Lord's and for Arsenal. He was a legend in our house, so my vote would be for Denis.

Andrew Strauss deserves a mention on this thread. Opener with world class stats. 2005 Ashes winner then captain of arguably the best England team of all time including winning in Australia, a rare achievement.

If you want to win in Australia, pick a Middlesex man as captain: Brearley, Gatting, Strauss. Just a thought.

John Rawlin had an outstanding record for the county over many years and would have regarded himself a trifle unfortunate never to have played for England, however, the limited amount of Test cricket during his career would have restricted his opportunities to some degree.

Looking at players that I have watched since 1960, I think that Mike Smith is very unlucky not to have got a Test cap. I know that he played around 5 One Day Internationals, but think that he would have been worth a punt in the longer form of the game.

Looking through the various posts on Middlesex players, the best etc. I find it strange that our best batsman by figures Patsy Hendren does not feature.. Understandable in that his career was from 1907 t0 1937. However, with 119 centuries and 40302 runs difficult to leave him out.Our best on pure stats. Mx average 49.81. Decent Test Record 51 Tests 3525 runs TS 205 Av 47.63 7 centuries. Born Chiswick.
